So how do I set the language on a certain area of text? Is it even possible?

The language is a property of the text, either characters or style.
So the best is to go to the style of your text and change the language.

Sounds like these directions change the default and do not not assign a different language setting to different parts of the text. In any case, this is completely and hopelessly unintuitive, clumsy, and much less user friendly than in MS Word, and i can't even get it to work even with these directions. This should work in OO exactly as in Word by simply highlighting the text and then choosing tools > language < choose language.

I wrote a French sentence into an English text, highlighted it, and then tried to apply the directions above, which apparently use incorrect/different terms because these were perhaps changed in OO 2.

Or you can have your own style and apply that to the text.
Or you can make yourself a personal defaul-template, with a.o. styles with the proper language-settings.

- New (Change would be Modify)
- Organizer > Name: French
- Font
- Language: French

Now i have a new style, but i can't apply it because it's not in the active list in the toolbar above and when i click More, it just pops up the grayed-out styles and formatting box and clicking on the new style French does nothing and rightclicking does not have the logical choice Apply, only New, Modify, and Delete.

Very badly designed, as if the makers of OO had never used Word and were the first to invent language settings for a text.
