After a two day struggle to get java where openoffice could see that it was
indeed installed it finally sees that I have java up and going. So I now can
embed a sound file in a presentation..... yes?

no

First of all, on the links

Insert->Object->Sound
Insert->Object->Video

the sound and video are both greyed out, indicating these are not options.

There is a option

Insert->Movie and Sound

but when I click that and select a file it says
"The format of the selected file is not supported"

Thus far avi, mpg, mpeg, mp3 and wav are not supported. How can I get them
supported?

Open office 2.0.1
Java 1.5.0_06
linux kernel 2.6.13-15
