Firstly, thank you for the response!

I returned my Mac Mini for the new Intel Mac Mini with OS 10.4.5.

I have Open Office running off of X11, which I had to custom
install from the OS X 10.4.5 installation DVD.

I have a few questions:

Hi Jon,

Lets see how we go with answers for your questions:
1) When I open MS Word documents in my Open Office, the characters
and spacing shift; my resume, for example, went from being one page
in MS Word, to over 1.5 pages in Open Office. What gives?

The most common cause I have seen for this is that you are using a
font that is not available on the platform and it guesstimates what
font to use. This causes some differences in the font used and
changes to the size.

I'm using Times New Roman font size 11, which both applications (Word and Open Office) have-- I don't understand why the spacing is shifting.

The other thing that may be different is that MS Word does not use page styles. This may be getting translated slightly differently when you import to OOo. Are the margins and page sizes etc the same? Where is the extra spacing actually coming from here?
2) Also, there is a delay in time from clicking on a menu to it
actually opening - it seems slow. It also takes a long time to boot
up the application after double clicking the icon. Is there a
patch that would speed this up?

The slow startup is probably because you have to start X11 first, so
there is no way around this at the moment. However, the clicking on
the menu taking time seems rather strange. The only time I have seen
this on my mac is when its memory is under heavy use. Does it happen
if OpenOffice.org is the only application running (with X11 of course)?

Yes, this happens when Open Office is the only app running... At most, I'll have Firefox and perhaps MS Word open simultaneously - but this happens when neither of those are running.

Hmm... Can't explain that one, if it is the menu being slow. I have no problem on my Mac, until it gets very heavily loaded.

Regards
Jonathon
