First be sure you have X11 windowing system installed (sounds like you
do, if you can see OOo in the dock). This may be counter-intuitive, but
you have to click on the X11 icon in the dock instead of the OOo icon to
get a window. If this is your first time using OOo, there may be a delay
while it reads all your Mac installed fonts and converts them to a
format OOo can use. Then you should see a registration setup screen.
After filling that out, you should be good to go. Be patient and give it
a chance, it does work. If you find it too frustrating, NeoOffice (link
is in the same intro. page as OOo) works without X11, uses Java for some
things, but doesn't need to convert fonts, or have separate File, etc.
