Deborah: OOo will open .doc files and can also save files it creates as .doc. But Word cannot open OOo files. To send files from OOo to Word users either save them in .doc format (which will preserve most but perhaps not all of your formatting) or export them as .pdf and send that. (Your Word colleagues will not be able to edit the .pdf files, however.)
