Add the "-nologo" flag to the end of the command that starts OOo.

If it starts from a desktop icon, right click on the icon and select properties. Somewhere in there (depending on your OS and desktop) you'll find the command it's running. The command itself is often embedded in double quotes. If you find that, then add the flag after the last double quote (preceded by a space).

On my home Kubuntu 5.10 machine Open Office 2 takes over 30 seconds to
load. During this time, the splash screen appears, and I cannot work
in _any_ program. How can I disable the splash screen?
