Tried it again and it worked just fine. Maybe I was trying to make it too
complicated by specifying what sheet it was to come from. =old in sheet2
picked up the value from sheet1 just fine without the specification of
$SHEET.. Thanks for the help.

In my little test I defined the name old on sheet1 en put the formula =old
on sheet2. No problems there, so it works just fine in my case.
