I think that was the key! I right-click one of the bullets, select Numbering/Bullets, and then click on character, 'l' (lower case ell) comes up highlighted in the grid. I scroll and choose a bullet-like character and all is fine. My suspicion is that somehow 'character' had become undefined. (If I reselect 'l', then dutifully the 'l' character is used as the bullet point).. hence the unhappy face perhaps?
