Templates and master documents are essential for my fiction writing.
For me, each chapter (or in my brand new project, each scene, at least
for now) is its own file, so master documents are very practical. As for
templates, different editors have different manuscript formatting
requirements, so all I have to do is create the master document with a
template that's formatted the way a particular editor wants it, using
the same style names I used in the sub docs, and I have the required
formatting without having to go through and change the formatting of
each chapter document before I submit.

I wish I could search and replace in a master document, but I know
that's beyond the scope of what master documents are meant to do, so I
can deal with it.

For short fiction, the master document is not needed, but the template
trick is still useful. I just have to apply the template to the actual
document instead of the master document
