company use MS Word and other MS programs. I can deal with
the Excel and Word files well enough that it is not a big
deal for me, merely an inconvenience.

What specifically is inconvinient in supporting Word/Excel?

Because I need to convert the document and save it in Word/Excel
format rather than odf.

I have moved to the odf format and if they complain, I can
always tell them it is internationally approved file format
standard. MS's file formats are not. :-)>

Unfortunatly, most users do not give a ... about tech details like this.
Why file format should affect them?

They don't, but at least I have the standards committee on my side!
