Before I installed Firefox on my Win XP Pro system, IE was my default browser. 
When I installed Firefox it asked me if I wanted it to be my default browser. I 
said "yes".

I would have thought that, similarly, Thunderbird would ask, at installation 
time, if you want it to be the default mail client. Does it not?
