Dear all,
I would like to migrate our office from WordPerfect to OpenOffice.org. We already use OOo Calc and Writer a lot, but the last only for a limited amount of text documents. I tried to find a replacement for the text merge function as it works in WP. I wonder if someone has a usable replacement for this function in OOo?

We are in the legal business, and have to work with standard contracts that have to be populated by particular data and to be treated then as a simple document that can be modified and adapted as the situation predicts. The merge function of WP is ideal for this.

For those of you not familiar with WP: merging text in WP is a function whereby a "master" document contains some tags where text from a "secondary" document is included so that the resulting text document can then be treated as a new document. The secondary document is made up of text blocs separated by tags so that the master document can include bloc 1, bloc 2 and so on at the place where you decided this bloc should be included in the master document.

Maybe I looked over it, but I could not find a comparable function in OOo.

I found that I can include fields in my master document, and then populate these fields by the appropriate data, but these fields are not converted to text after treatment. I need to have a text document that can not be changed afterwards, unless by jumping into the text and modify, not by modifying the fields from outside or something.

For those of you who wonder why we should migrate if WP is so good adapted to our functionality (which is true, WP is still the greatest office software a ever worked with) a few reasons: - Communication with the outside world is better, or if you prefer easier (pdf conversion, Word conversion);
- We like to avoid to use multiple packages;
- This is a crucial step towards the use of Linux company-wide
- Base is becoming a very powerful part of OOo, and we hope to transfer our database interface to OOo;
- Stability is better (on Windooze that is);
- ....

TIA

Freddy
