have you tried
X11:preferences:color ?
On my machine the color is adjusted to 16,5mio
And I do not have any problems. (PB G4, 1,67GHz 17'')

By the way:
the 10.4.7 and 10.4.8 are not really bug-free... :-(
some problems with graphic cards occured since I did an upgrade.
