BTW, I would also highly recommend checking out NeoOffice, which is a port of OpenOffice without X11.
And yes, it will open OOo files without any problem.

     OpenOffice.org files can be read by OOo on any platform it uses.
Since V 2.0.x uses the ISO standard file format, these files can also
be read by many other office suites. (Microsoft is the notable
exception.)
     One more thing. Look at http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/ before
trying to install OOo on the Mac. People have run into problems when
they did not do this first. There are instructions there that you
must follow if you are going to be successful in installing OOo.
