I had the same problem yesterday. Someone steered me to the archives
and I found the answer.
Using a terminal program, log on as root.
mkdir /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF.bad
mv /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTf/Vera* /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF.bad
That should do it.
