In Gregory Forster's earlier comment in this thread he gave a procedure
for getting OOo to browse for a data source (Thunderbird in his example)
not explicitly mentioned in its built-in list. Does this same procedure
not work on the Linux distributions you and others mention?

Yes, you can select an alternative data source, such as a MySQL database.
