Ah yes, it is a basic task. It is even simple as long as you know
the secret: all other applications are accessed through the Writer
Window or double clicking on file requiring the particular file.
(Double clicking a spreadsheet will open Calc, the spreadsheet
application.)
To open an application, double click to open OOo. (The name is
really OpenOffice.org so many of us use OOo as an abbreviation.)
Across the top of the OOo Writer window from Left to Right is a menu:
File Edit View etc. Below this menu is the Standard toolbar
containing icons from Left to Right: New Open Save etc. Within
the OOo Writer window, use File > New to access a list of the other
applications. Clicking on the down arrow on the right side of the New
icon will open the same context menu with all the applications
listed.
