I had this problem too. ( Fedora ) OOo *used* to keep its fonts separate, once I figured this out I just copied from the system directory to OOo's. It may be that KDE and Gnome are doing better at font handling and this isn't necessary any more. Anyway its working on Core 6 with KDE.
