This can only be guaranteed for the "official" edition (as stated in my
original post), for distro modified editions the programme is often
installed under /usr/lib or /usr/lib64

Not true for either of the OOo editions I have installed on different
boxes, both "official" and distro modified.

Maybe so, but not one that I have encountered.
