One caution, if you are sorting in CALC if you just select (highlight) the column you want sorted, but not the entire rows for the selected cells, then just the selection will be sorted but not the unselected columns.
For example selecting only the first column for the sort:
BEFORE            AFTER
B 1 2 3               A 1 2 3
A 4 5 6               B 4 5 6
C 7 8 9               C 7 8 9

But if all columns had been selected then the result would have been:
A 4 5 6
B 1 2 3
C 7 8 9
