Good thinking. The questions usually follow problems which arise after
installation.

One of these may answer you in part at least:
http://documentation.openoffice.org/setup_guide2/2.x/en/SETUP_GUIDE.pdf
http://documentation.openoffice.org/setup_guide2/2.x/en/SETUP_GUIDE_A4.pdf

You can install the 2.x. series alongside the 1.x. series. On installation
of 2.x, you are given the opportunity to import your existing settings. I
forget how that works - whether you then have two settings folders or one
which is shared. If I was your canny self, I would back up the settings
folder as a precaution.

IIRC, the official advice is to reinstall 2.x if you subsequently uninstall
1.x. An experienced user recently reported having both installed together
without any problem. So, your 2.x installation is separate from 1.x and not
an upgrade of the latter. 1.x seems to be favoured still by some users for
a production environment.

There is a problem with migrating macros from 1.x to 2.x. If that is a
consideration, it is suggested that you do not migrate the settings and,
preferably, uninstall 1.x first - see the comments in this issue:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=56914
Presumably, you would then copy the macro files into the Basic folder of the
new settings folder or import them using the software tools.

The finer points of interaction with JRE (i.e. which version to use), you
will have to discover by trial. If you have more than one version (why?),
you can choose which one is used by OpenOffice. If you install another
version later, you can change the selection. I only ever have one JRE
installed, I update occasionally and I've had no problems with OpenOffice
using the latest version.
