Paul and NoOp,

Thanks for your replies. For some reason my post requesting a site to
download 2.0.4 took several days to appear. In the meantime I did find
64-bit .debs for 2.1, and I installed it. But it was a mess, so I
uninstalled it. Then I reinstalled 2.0.4 from Synaptic, but after doing
so stuff that was working in 2.0.4 became broken and I was worse off
than before.

It took me hours of work, but I finally managed to remove all traces of
2.0.4 and 2.1. It seems that apt-get remove --purge does not do a very
good job, nor does "remove completely" in Synaptic. They left hundreds
of old files all over my hard disk.

I am now back to a stable 2.0.4 that is working fine except that my
original problems with it are not fixed. That is, drag and drop editing
of text is still broken and some of the settings in Tools > Options are
not being saved in the default template. Otherwise, everything is
working pefectly.

I filed a bug report with OOo about the drag and drop editing of text,
but one of the developers closed the issue without even reading what I
said. Since it is closed, no one can now add any comments to it.

http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=74478

But I did that before trying 2.1. During my brief interlude with 2.1 I
discovered that drag and drop editing of text and the problems with
settings in Tools > Options not being saved to the default template
were still broken. Therefore, I concluded that the problem is with
Ubuntu Edgy amd64, not OOo. Besides, there are not many of us who have
been bitten by this bug, and all of us are on Edgy amd64. Therefore, I
filed a bug report with Edgy:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org-amd64/+bug/85248

That is where things are at the moment. I am going to just live with
the drag and drop of text not working. I could try to find the
64-bit .debs of 2.0.2 and install them, but I am tired of messing with
it for now. I have homework due Monday and finals are looming, so I
don't want to risk going through OpenOffice hell again for a while.

Thanks to all who helped, and if I find anything further I will report
back to the list.
