Help,
I am using Open Office version 1.1.5. My problem is with the "Compatibility" settings on Tools>Options>Text Document>General. I am using two different computers. The first computer is an older Pentium, running Windows 98se. On that machine, I have created a template with custom styles and fields that I use to produce a number of documents. As part of that template, on the "Compatibility" settings that I mentioned above, I have:
      "Use printer..." unchecked,
      "Add spacing..." checked,
"Add paragraph..." checked, "Align tab..." checked.
These settings produce the results that I want.
However, when I try to use the same version of Open Office (1.1.5) on a laptop running Windows XP, the "Compatibility" settings take on a mind of their own. I have imported the template that I use, yet, each time I open a document, the settings keep changing to:
      "Use printer..." checked,
      "Add spacing..." unchecked,
"Add paragraph..." unchecked, "Align tab..." checked. Needless to say, this completely changes the layout of my documents. I have changed the settings back to what I want them to be, and hit "Save" as prompted. Yet, EVERY time I re-open one of the documents, those settings are BACK to the way that I DON'T want them! Why? What am I missing? I have tried editing the template, just in case it picked up an error during the import process, but those settings still keep changing back. Please help. This problem is extremely frustrating and time consuming. This has proven to be so infuriating, that I have had to give up on using the laptop for this work. I don't know what to do, as I got the laptop because back problems would not let me sit at a desk to use my old computer. Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure about such an old version of OpenOffice (OO) but in modern versions (we're on 2.1 at the moment) there is a thing called the Quickstarter which gets in the way when one tries to have OO remember option settings. If it is running on your XP system there will be an icon for it in the System Tray (probably bottom right of your screen). The icon will be blue/grey and have flying birds, the sort drawn by kids, on it. Right click on the icon and choose Exit. Then open Writer from the Start>All Programs>OpenOffice menu, change your settings and close Writer. Now when you open Writer again (same method) your options should have "stuck".

The Quickstarter, by default, starts when Windows starts. You can disable it permanently (recommended, at least by me) from within Writer. Go to Tools>Options>OpenOffice.org>Memory and make sure the box labelled "Load OpenOffice.org during system start-up" is *not* selected.

If that doesn't work, or if 1.1.5 doesn't have the Quickstarter, then you'll have to hope someone else here can help you; please ask again if you need to.
