the problem was fixed by finding and deleting OpenOffice.org2
- - - why it was .org2 - I do not know - - -
Then uninstalling and then reinstalling OOo 2.1 that was (re)downloaded
2 weeks ago.
Writer is the one I use most often, but other modules were the same.
The problem would not go away on a reboot as you have in your
4 step listed below. 2,4,8, etc pages per sheet worked fine, but the
1 page per sheet did not - shown as 4 page per sheet starting at
the upper right corner of a portrate sheet.
Something in the user preferences got messed up big time.
What was wrong, I do not know.

You still didn't say what version of OOo you are using or what OOo
module you are attempting to print from. It's important that you do so.
File > Printer Settings >
Used Defaut printer > printer settings / properities / pager per sheet
dialog (LaserJet 4M)
Those are printer specific settings rather than OOo settings. It could
be that OOo is misinterpreting them, or not clearing them, or not
sending the proper print command when you print 2 per page, then go to 1
per page etc., particularly if you can print OK from other applications.
Can you try:
1. Turning the printer off & reboot the PC,
2. Turn the printer back on,
2. Open a new OOo session (Writer) write a single word in the doc,
3. File|Print (don't change any properties), print the doc.
4. Open previous document that you'd tried to print before & do the same
as 3.
Let us know what happened.
