I finally was able to remedy the situation by taking the text, pasting it into a text-editor, where the formatting was lost, then Paste-special back into a formatted document.
I guess it is because this operation lost the 'white space' attribute for the text. You can check the content.xml file of your ODT document to see if there is this attribute with a unusual value (see the end of the thread). NB: I've seen this sudden behavior on the French forum, there is perhaps a special key combination ? We've never found out.
The thread has to do with a feature of not showing any spaces at the end of a line, as I understand it, when one comes to the end of a line and hits return.
It can also happen in a middle of a paragraph (but still at the end of a line). NB: I wouldn't have stopped helping on the mailing list, it would have been just your issues.
