Are these plain text files with data elements separated by tab
characters? If so, this is what is usually referred to as a
"comma-separated variable" (.csv) file, but in this case with tabs
instead of commas.
If so:
o Rename the file so that its extension is .csv instead of
.tab. (This helps OpenOffice to choose Calc to open the file, rather
than Writer.)
o Open the file in OpenOffice: either use File | Open... from within
OpenOffice or right-click the file and select Open With > | OpenOffice.
o Calc's Text Import dialogue should open. You will see the start
of the data in the bottom window, but it will not be distributed
properly between columns, since the default is for the data to be
separated by commas, not tabs. Add a tick to "Tab" under "Separated
by" and you will see the data reformatted between columns in the
window at the bottom. Make any more modifications here if necessary
- perhaps removing the tick from "Comma".
o Choose OK.
Bingo!
