Will this software work with the above OS? Does it contain a program compatable with Outlook? Will it work with Vista 64 bit?
Thanks Jim
OOo will work very well in a Windows XP Pro environment. That's what I use, and I just converted from Office 2003 last week. I can't say as to Vista, but there are versions that work in a 64 bit environment. Others have said that it works with Vista also.

For my money (after some exhaustive research) I decided that "most" of the features from Outlook can be found using Thunderbird.
However...(this is where it gets sticky):
Where in Outlook you would automatically bring up a "Word" editor for sending e-mail, Thunderbird does not. I have yet to find a way for Thunderbird to access the "Write" program (word processor for OOo) so that I can change fonts, formatting, etc. as one is familiar with in Outlook. Be aware of that. If you must send documents "created" in Outlook, you must first create them in "Write", and then save them, and attach them as files in Thunderbird. I can't seem to find another way.

Also, Thunderbird is "just" an email and newsgroup program. If you need contacts, calendar, tasks, etc. as with Outlook, you must rely on other programs
(yes, they are available, and also free to download).

So:
cost of OOo? Free
cost of doing business the way you're used to? some extra time
benefit of not being in thrall to Microsoft again for endless updates? Priceless

Load and install OpenOffice, (yeah, you can put it on the same machine as Office or Outlook with no problems, just be sure to see that when you're installing it, it does NOT make OOo the default for the file types, uncheck all those boxes)
try it out, then load Thunderbird and try it out as well.
Good Luck.
