Hi, I have the new MAC 24" monitor PC and am confused as to the difference between Open Office and the Neo suite? I would like the most comprehensive. Please advise. Regards, Holli
Hello Holli The main differences between OpenOffice.org and NeoOffice are: • NeoOffice is a 'fork' from OpenOffice.org, this means that a small team of people use the freely available program code of OpenOffice.org, make some modifications to it and make it available under another name, and another licence • NeoOffice is always based on a slightly older version of OpenOffice.org, so it doesn't include the latest developments of the mainstream OOo • NeoOffice runs 'native' on Mac, while -for the time being- you need to install a 'windowing program' X11 to run OOo on a Mac. Personally, I find this not so inconvenient, certainly not on a recent Mac that has lots of live memory as yours probably has. • Besides running 'natively', NeoOffice also has some extra's OOo hasn't yet, like support for macros in the spreadsheet part. Probably later this year, OpenOffice.org will present a new version for Mac that is 'native' (runs directly on Aqua, with no need for X11). This will make NeoOffice quite obsolete. I have tried NeoOffice on my quite new iMac, but decided to return to OpenOffice.org. I think OOo, the program and its functionality, the community of developers and users, the freer licence, etc. make it more interesting and worthwhile. The NeoOffice people use the work of this community, but do not contribute to it (for historic reasons, for reasons of the more strict licence, whatever...) Anyway: you can try both since both are free to download and install on your computer. Please consult the How-To Install on the Mac porting pages ( http://porting.openoffice.org/mac) before installing OOo. http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/Howto_OOo_2.0_MacOSX_english.pdf Good luck -- Guy using dutch OOo 2.2 RC 4 on a iMac Intel DualCore Tiger and dutch OOo 2.2 RC 4 on a G4 PPC Powerbook Tiger -- please reply only to users@openoffice.org -- Dodoes can't afford to have headaches
