There are a couple of problems that are likely causing what you
see.
When you are saving a file for the first time, the Save As window
appears. There is where you enter the name of the file. At the bottom
of this window is a box labeled Automatic file name extension. It
sounds like this is not checked. That might explain why neither you
nor your teacher could open it.
The second part as applies to the Save As window. Under the File
name is the File type. This is a dropdown list with OpenDocument Text
(.odt) as the default. You need to open this dropdown list and scroll
down to and select Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc). Again, make sure
the box labeled Automatic file name extension is checked. Then click
save. The file will be saved as a .doc file.
Actually, there is possibly an easier way. When you have
completed your document, use File > Send > Email as Microsoft Word.
If your email client cooperates, doing this will open your email
client with the document attached to it as a .doc file.
