Thanks for the timely help offered but I am hazy whether to use a master doc or just separate docs in writer 2.2. Since the complete project will run to a couple of hundred pages and since I do not wish to change boats in midstream what are the advantages of using one and not the other?

If you are set on using Writer, I would look at the "master document" method
rather than having one gigantic document which you are likely to find
increasingly difficult to open and save.

I would look at options other than Writer, such as Scribus.
