Hi Richard, and all who replied me,
I am very grateful for the suggestions rendered. I have both done the "Save As" into another file name as well as to Microsoft Word format but still to no avail. I also clicked on "Edit" button (the icon with a paper and pen/pncil) but still the document was read only in both the OpenDocument and Word formats. I could open the document with MS Word on another Windows XP machine and did my editing there. BUT...the next time when I turned on my Windows XP machine, the file saved as MS Word format was editable bot not the original OpenDocument (.odt) formatted one. So I suspect, one may have to close the entire OpenOffice QuickStarted on the below right toolbar and restart it in order to edit the MS Word document or reboot. I hope that this problem can be rectified by the developers. Here is my analysis. If a document is saved as OpenDocument Text (.odt) format at first instance, the next time the document is opened up, it becomes Read-Only. But if the document is saved in another format like MS Word at first instance, it can be opened again for edititng. Also if this same document is saved as OpenDocument Text (.odt) after it is created and saved in another format, it can also be edited. So I believe the moral of the story is "Don't save in OpenDocument Text (.odt) at first instance so that the document can be opened for editing". I trust this helps. But I think this is still something that the developers need to fix. My opinion is that it is not a big problem but a bit of a nuisance. Godfrey

Hi,

I am using Windows XP and OpenOffice 2.2.

I created a word document some time ago. Now I need to edit it but its
read-only and I can't find where to change this.

Appreciate if you can help me.

Thanks and Regards,
Godfrey

The mysterious "read only" syndrome is at play ... I don't know the reason, but I've encountered this, both with my self (rarely) and with people whom I'm instructing. A document will be opened, and for some reason, it is opened as "read only".

The most certain solution that I have found is to simply do a File > Save As, and save it as a slightly different name as the original. Then you should be able to edit it.

This is curious. I always save in .odt, and have never had trouble with it coming out as read-only next time around.
