Hi Bonnie,
If a crash made you lose all your work, then you must not have saved. This is not a fault in the software, but the operator. The first rule of computing is 'Save often'. The second is like the first: 'Save often'. There's another first rule: 'Make a backup of anything you don't want to do over'.

Hello. I was writing up a very large report for a class of mine, and
your stupid program shut down in the middle and I lost all my work.
Thanks a lot. Your program sucks.

Perhaps... perhaps not.

- Could be your hardware.
- Could be your operating system.
- Could be operator headspace.
- Could be a bug in the program.

However, the OOo installs with a default autosave feature - this is
generally set to save every 15 minutes.

Most likely your work, except for the last 15 minutes, has been saved.
What happens when you open Writer again? Did you get a message that
there was a problem with your last document and an option to perform an
autorecovery on the document? If so, did you click on the document and
allow the program to try and recover the document?

First try reopening Writer and see if perhaps your document can be
recovered.

In the future I'd recommend that you backup your work on a regular basis
by performing a File|Save As. However, if you are working on an unstable
PC with an unstable operating system, or simply too busy to do this, OOo
has an option that you can turn on to perform automatic backups of your
document for you. Here is how you turn that on:

Tools|Options|Load/Save|Save
click the box next to "Always create backup copy". Make sure you also
have the "Save AutoRecovery information every" box clicked and a set
time in the right hand box. You can set it for something other than 15
minutes, say every 5 minutes if you wish.

I would also add that in the future if you are looking for help, popping
onto a mailing list that is read by thousands of users worldwide and
declaring that the program sucks is not the best way to get help. It's
understandable that you may be frustrated and upset that you experienced
a crash in the middle of an important report, however I think you'll
find that if you politely ask for help here most folks are willing to help.
