I'm puzzled by the original posting. Is he saying that a .doc saved by
OOo is somehow fundamentally different from one saved by Word and won't
work with pdf-convert? Or is he saying ".doc" when he means ".odt", and
his problem is he doesn't know how to save as .doc? Or does he just
want to convert from OOo format to something a print-shop can use?

In any case, I'd be surprised at a publisher preferring an image file
to postscript or pdf - I'd have thought either of these would be
preferable. gif I'd have thought a non-starter because of the quality
(or lack of).

As (yet another) alternative, he could save as postscript (using a
windows standard printer driver such as an Apple laserwriter) from his
wp program of choice, and use ghostscript to render as a jpg (or many
other image alternatives) file. A freeware version of doing what pdf-
convert will cost you to do :-)
