Three suggestions:
1) use OpenOffice.org Draw, not Writer.
2) try Scribus instead
3) upgrade to Debian 4.0.

Not sure just what type of flyer you wish to create, but it's easy
enough to do in OOo. Download just about any Writer newsletter,
brochure, newspaper template and that will give you the basis for using
frames, graphic insertion, etc. You can also use the Draw application
and/or turn on the Draw toolbar in Writer (View|Toolbars|Drawing) to
create font art using the fontwork gallery (similar to WordArt in MS), etc.
