Rather than some sort of stupidity, I'm thinking that most people have a limited and rather inaccurate vocabulary. They've worked with Microsoft Office so long that they think that every word processor is Word, every spreadsheet is Excel, and so on. And I don't think these are stupid people. Stupid people do not survive or function well in an everyday environment.
