Whatever happened, it's *very* unlikely that OpenOffice.org (OOo) itself
is to blame. I have no idea how reliable filehippo is, you'd be better
off downloading directly from www.openoffice.org. Though with only a
dial-up connection, you should probably try a library or a friend to
burn a CD after downloading using a broadband connection. This may be
too "geeky" for you to understand, but anybody who could help you will
know how to do it. All that's for later, though.
Did you do anything after downloading to try to install OOo? If not, all
that is on your system is a bunch of files in a folder waiting to be
installed, and you can just delete the folder. But if the copy you got
was infected somehow, and you tried to install, that won't do anything
to fix the problem, I'm afraid. For anything really drastic to happen,
like what you've indicated, the installer program would have been taken
over by a malicious program and the damage would already be done.
Once installed, OOo does show up in Add/Remove Programs, as well as in
the "All Programs" list from the Start menu. You may have to turn off
the Quickstarter first; look for an icon with three birds in the system
tray at the bottom left of your screen, right-click, and select the
option that turns it off - Exit, I think). Then Add/Remove Programs
would work, if OOo ever really was installed.
One other, and far less drastic, possibility is that during the install,
you allowed OOo to become the default for accessing MS Office files.
That would make them show up with the OOo icon instead of the MS ones
you're familiar with, and if that's what you meant by the "takes over MS
files stuff" and "lost everything" you really haven't. In that case, the
files should open just fine under OOo, or you could change the file
associations back to MS Office by right-clicking and going through the
"Open With" to re-establish the connection with the right MS Office
program. In that case, you should check the option to "always use this
program" to open files of this type. (PS - not familiar with Windows
2000 Pro, this might be a bit different there. If so, just search in the
system help for "file associations.")
