I noticed that when using the format painter to copy a character format it also picks up the paragraph format. Is there a way to prevent that?

You would expect this to happen - wouldn't you? - if you use the Format Paintbrush to copy formatting from one part of a document to another. When you copy the formatting of a piece of text, all aspects of formatting are included.

But this doesn't happen if you copy just the character format. To do this, create a character style with the appropriate qualities (or use an existing one) and then use Fill Format Mode from the Styles and Formatting window. Use Format | Styles and Formatting, or F11, or the button at the left of the Formatting toolbar to open the Styles and Formatting window, select the Character Styles button, select the required character style, and then select the Fill Format Mode button. This appears to paint just the character style.

I trust this helps.
