Have you considered ENDNOTES?

the same content at the bottom of a page doesn't seem very
"professional" to me). Right now I am cheating through the use of

document get moved to other pages. When the footnote references get
split over multiple pages I'd like to have one instance of that footnote
text per page, so my readers won't have to keep flipping pages.
