OpenOffice should be able to open and write Excel spreadsheets, other
than the lastest Office 2007 format and save it back as an XLS file. 
However, bear in mind that there may be issues with macros.

BTW, you don't have to pay for OpenOffice.  It's a free download from
www.openoffice.org.
