if the email client problem is taken aside, what are the reasons for
either allowing or disallowing non-subscribed posts.

although everyone has put forward their points supporting either case.
i would choose to go with a subscribers-only list..and i'll try n
explain
first i'd like to ask, what do the subscribed list members fear of
losing if they cut off non-subscribers? too many potential users, who
can't be assured if OO.o runs on Vista or if there is an email client
component that substitutes or surpasses outlook?
i feel that it is better to make the web resources prominent. for
starters, there are many resources like md5sums which have to be
guessed. even the font sizes are reminiscent of a pocket device
display. that could be another reason why people miss out on obviously
available information. and i suppose webservers designed for such
projects are designed to handle a lot of visitors. too many posts is a
lot of traffic on the mailing lists.

the other resource pointed out is the FAQ. what would help further is
to improve on the search method implemented on the mailing list
archive. i did see 2-3 sites archiving conversations on openoffice
lists. if someone feels that any of these existing ones have powerful
search capabilities, they can be mentioned as an interim measure. i
feel that for most users the web interface to information is more
familiar and quicker. What if there was some way to initiate a search
with the terms in a FAQ to find out discussions about current
developments on that FAQ topic. e.g. there could have been a FAQ "Does
OO.o run on Vista?" which probably was posted around the time of OO.o
1.1 (suppose). and there could be a link to search which shows up
threads that mention "OO.o has better Vista integration from ver. 2.2"
this way, despite the webpages being not updated won't misinform the
visitors.

I'd also recommend subscribing to the list to actually learn about
OpenOffice.org. because there could be many people offline who would
lure potential users back to other office suites and there is no
better source of information than the mailing list since it is the
most updated resource.

Lastly getting mails twice thru the list...one as a list member and
one as the cc'd version which is copied to the non-subscriber is
redundant usage of mail space.

Join the list. We are regular users like you and can speak and
understand your language.

Being part of the list is being part of the software project and as a
pro-OO.o user, i would rather be interested to volunteer to help
people who take interest in the project.

hope i have not written too much.
