You have already achieved what you need, in fact. If you go to File | Page Preview (or use the Page Preview button), you will see that the actual page numbers will appear where you see this legend. You can toggle between the file name ("Page numbers") and the actual page number in the Writer display using View | Field Names or Ctrl+F9.
Also how do I get to put the number I want to start numbering in the footer or wherever it goes?
Double-click the field to bring up the Edit Fields window. Adjust the value in Offset.
