It appears you got this from someone who charges for providing nothing
more than a download link for something that's available for free from
www.openoffice.org. You'll have to complain to them, as you didn't pay
your money to anyone here. We are simply volunteers, who help others
with OpenOffice and the vast majority of us have no other connection to
OpenOffice, Sun or vendors.

As I mentioned, you can always download OpenOffice at no charge from
www.openoffice.org.

James,

The URL definitely takes the user to an openoffice.org web site, in
particular to "http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ErrorPage";. So what is
this site?

When I go there I get "Password ticket 8f70f9e837630ed5b294e94efc790cfc is
not valid. It may have been expired or used already." which seems to
indicate that OO Knows about passwords and tickets. What is going on here?

I deliberately haven't copied the *unsubscribed* OP on this. I hope you'll
understand ...

As proposed on the Servlet error page, I sent a mail to the Webmaster...
Curious to know what this is about!

If you goto www.openoffice.org, click
  My Pages
  Register for an account
Fill in a username and valid email address, and click the Register button.
You will receive an email at the address you gave with a similar link.

All this person did was try to register as a user on the OpenOffice.org website.

The same process anyone has to go through to register an account. if you don't click the link in the 3 week period it's valid, the account is not created. You only need this account if you are planning on participating in OpenOffice.org in some way... opening or contributing to a big report, project etc.
