The only way I have been able to open a MS word doc as an email attachment is
to first save it to disk and then open OO and use the open file menu to open
it. Is there anyway of getting OO to open docs directly?

Read the Help within Windows on the subject of File Associations. Then
follow the instructions to associate MS Office documents (.doc, .xls,
.ppt etc.) with the "soffice.exe" program which is in the "program"
subdirectory of the directory into which you installed OpenOffice.
Having made the appropriate file associations, simply double clicking
the attachment will open it in OO. Before changing the file associations
you should shut down your e-mail program. After making the changes I
recommend you re-boot your system although it may not be necessary.
