Darklooks (just installed from Synaptics - 'gnome-themes-extras') works just fine on an A21M Thinkpad. That said, you really would need to say specifically which theme you are using (there are quite a few "Dark" themes"), your graphics card, etc., etc., before someone could actually help you. I'd recommend that you try asking on the Ubuntu forums.
