As I understand it the default format for Office 2007 is .docx. OpenOffice doesn't read or write that format, neither do earlier versions of Microsoft Office. However Office 2007 will save files to earlier, Office 2003 and before, version of Microsoft files. Save the MS Office files in the earlier version format and OpenOffice can read and edit them.
