After you download Openoffice, you have to install it. Have you done this? Assuming you're running Windows, you have to double click on the file to start the installation. You'll then proceed through a series of panels, where you can generally accept the defaults. After the installation is complete, there should be a folder and icons for OpenOffice in the Start menu. Select Writer to open up the word processor. Please feel free to ask more questions here.
