When you install OpenOffice, you're given the option of making it the default application for Microsoft Office files. By not selecting the file types, you will leave Microsoft Office as the default. Regardless, it is easy to change the file associations, at any time, by following these instructions. Changing file associations Right click on file icon Select Open With > Choose Program... Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and choose the desired application.
