It depends in what sort of document/file you have the list saved. If it's in
a Word or Writer document then you can use Writer. If it's in a Calc or
Excel document then you use Calc. If it's in an Access database then you
could use Base (the database component of OpenOffice).

What happens when you *double* click on the file's icon in an Explorer
window? Almost certainly some program will run. That's the program to use to
edit the document. If Windows (I assume you are using Windows) asks you what
you want to do with the file, then read on.

Without knowing how you made the list we can't be more specific than this.
Look at the "type" of the file the list is stored in. The "type" is the last
3 or 4 characters of the name of the file, **after** the last dot. So, for
example, the "type" of a file named "index.html" is HTML, a web page. The
"type" of a file called myPhoneList.doc is "doc", a Word document. and so
on.

If you are not seeing the "extension" (the official name for this suffix)
then, in an Explorer window, click on
Tools, then on Folder Options, then on View. Scroll down till you see a
little box labelled "Hide extensions for know file types. Ensure this box
does *not* have a tick in it. Then click Apply and then OK. Now your
Explorer windows will show the full names, including extensions, of your
documents & files.

Some common types are
.doc Word
.xls Excel
.odt Writer
.ods Calc
.txt WordPad or NotePad
.pdf Adobe Acrobat - you will almost certainly *not* be able to change
this without expensive software.

Windows Explorer shows the *name* of the type of the file if you choose the
Details view: click View and then Details.
