No. There are tons of programs that support the ISO 26300:2006 (a.k.a ODF
which is rather an International format than OpenOffice.org's own format,
but still the format that OpenOffice.org use by default) more or less. I can
see that other people already answered this and I just want to point out
that there is not point telling your friend to save it in another format
(well, maybe PDF), especially not a closed format like DOC. There are SO
many other (better in my opinion) ways to view the file.

No.

Will it change all of my Word docs to .odt documents?


No, but if you want to, you can do it manually (using the Save As...
function).
