I've just finished a draft of a 18-page article, and I have 19 named references
in it. That seems to be the limit on reference names that show in the
"Selection" column of the "References" tab of the "Fields" dialog, so if I add
more, I'll have to start scrolling to find what I want. Since the article is a
practice run for a book, I'm worried that trying to work with what I expect to
be dozens of named references will become rather unpleasant.
Different references are for different things. Some are for figure numbers
(i.e., "Figure 4"), some for citation numbers (i.e., "Reference 11"), some are
for listing numbers, some for particular examples on particular pages, etc.
Because the references are naturally categorized, it'd be nice if I could refer
to the categories when selecting the target of a cross reference I want to
insert. It'd be a lot easier, for example, to choose among the dozen or so
reference names in the "Figure" category than to try to ferret them out from the
scores of other references names I use for other things. Is there a way to do
this?
Since the "Selection" column alphabetizes the reference names, I suppose I could
use prefixes to identify the categories, e.g., "Fig: MI example", "Fig: SI
example", "Ref: EC++3e", "Ref: MEC++", etc. But I'd still have to scroll like a
maniac to get down to "Xref: furry animal" when selecting the target for a cross
reference. Is there a better way?
Thanks,
Scott
